Oppression in the U.S. Church

This is the sort of thing that appalled me about the U.S. Church — the way some of the ‘culture warrior’ bishops are driving a ‘coach and four’ through even the most basic of human rights. It is no wonder people are leaving the Church in droves. Miami archbishop warns employees against supporting gay marriage, even in a tweet
 (RNS) As Florida became the latest state to legalize same-sex marriage this week, Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski sent a memo to all church employees reiterating that any expressions of support for gay marriage — even if it’s only a tweet or Facebook post — could cost them their job.

Reflection on the Fourth Sunday of Advent

Shortly after I returned from my time in the U.S. I met with a friend of mine, a bright, preceptive woman in her mid-sixties. I had been away from the middle of October to late November, and though I had kept an eye to the Irish papers, I wasn’t following events in this country too closely. My friend surprised me by saying:
“You were lucky to be out of this country”.

The Association of Catholic Priests has called on Senator Rónán Mullen to apologise to Fr Tony Flannery over remarks he made about him on Newstalk.
